10 Aviation forWomen M A Y / J U N E 2 0 1 7 C H A P T E R S W A I N E W S INDIA CHAPTER The India Chapter celebrated International Women's Day with the Ministry of Civil Aviation in Delhi, India, on March 8, 2017. The occasion was to unveil the slogan, "Beti Ki Udaan, Desh Ka Swabhimaan," in the presence of Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Shri. Rajiv Nayan Choubey , secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, along with Presi- dent Mrs . Radha Bhatia . The slogan means, "A daughter's flight (career in aviation) is the pride of the nation." The objective of the celebration was to lead female empowerment in the sphere of the aviation industry and to also talk about the work done by the WAI India Chapter in the last year. Mrs. Radha Bhatia, in her address to the guests, talked about the past successful event, Girls in Aviation Day, and how the India Chapter will be focusing on scholar- ships for underprivileged young girls. The program was attended by esteemed dignitaries and WAI India Chapter mem- bers to create awareness among the girls about various aviation opportunities. ✈ MIDDLE EAST CHAPTER Hosted by Airport Show 2017 and organized in partnership with the Women In Aviation Mid- dle East Chapter, the second Arab Women in Aviation General Assembly will take place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibi- tion Centre on May 15, 2017. Featuring over 200 attendees, the WAI Mid- dle East Chapter will host internationally re- nowned speakers, including Chapter President Mervat Sultan and other regional aviation lead- ers, who will set the stage for greater career op- portunities for Arab women across the aviation and aerospace industries. ✈ UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA CHAPTER The WAI University of North Dakota Chapter held its Annual Girl Scouts Day at the end of February. Some 40 Girl Scouts from different parts of North Dakota and Min- nesota attended. The girls learned about space studies in UND's space suit lab and weather from our atmospheric sciences team, and got a chance to see the blue screen that they do weather broadcast with in action. Attendees learned about the Air Race Classic and had a paper airplane contest. They also got to spend some time in UND's 360 degree tower lab and radar lab to learn about air traffic control, UND's Cessna 172 Flight Training Devices, and in UND'S new UAS gym flying small UAVs. We had a blast introducing the girls to the many different areas of aviation. ✈ FIRST IN FLIGHT CHAPTER On Saturday, Ma rch 11, the First in Flight Chapter had a meet up at the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Char- lotte, North Carolina. The chapter saw the "Miracle on the Hudson" airplane, as well as many vintage static displays. There is a diverse, interesting collection at this museum, and the staff is enthusi- astic about encouraging education in the community. The chapter is planning to have Girls in Aviation Day at the muse- um this year. ✈ DETROIT CHAPTER On March 28, 2017, the WAI Detroit Chapter hosted the Detroit Aviation Community Meet and Greet and fol- lowed the broader meet and greet, with a chapter meeting. ✈ UND CHAPTER INDIA CHAPTER FIRST IN FLIGHT CHAPTER
