The tour was given by Kristine Yaroschuk , the first female helicopter pilot for the state. Some 30 chapter members attended, including several Girl Scouts f r o m Tr o o p 4 0 3 8 9. T h e chapter members learned about procedures, training, and what is involved with being a pilot of Trooper 3! Look for five AOPA Chapter members that will participate in the Air Race Clas- sic departing from Frederick on June 20. Lin Caywood and Janet Davidson (who is also WAI's Volunteer Coordinator at the annual conference) will be flying as part of Team Freakin Awesome (No. 12). Team AOPAngels (No. 43) is comprised of Luz Beattie , Kathy Dondzila , and Paula Wivell . Best of luck to both teams! ✈ MILE HIGH CHAPTER David Ulane , director of aeronautics for the Colorado Department of Transpor- tation (CDOT), was guest speaker at the Mile High Chapter meeting. David spoke about how Colorado was one of the last states to get an aeronautics division to de- cide how money will be spent in the state for aviation. He explained how the Aero- nautics Department gives the FAA mon- ey to fund the new virtual air traffic con- trol tower at the Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport that could allow one tower to help air traffic control at many different airports from one location. ✈ AIR CAPITAL CITY CHAPTER The Air Capital City Chapter of Women in Aviation experienced the power of the WAI conference mentoring and networking in an incred- ible way. Member and Outreach Chair Chrystina Jones just so happened to have her military promotion date fall during this year's conference. Chapter member Jasmin Silence was asked to officiate the promotion ceremony in Orlando. However, WAI members Julie Tizard , Kathy Co- sand , Carola List , Allison Sutter , Lucy Young , Barbara Garwood , Claudia McKnight , and Karen Daneu (who are also with Women Military Avia- tors) had a surprise in mind. They recruited WAI Hall of Fame Induct- ee Lt. Gen. Stayce Harris , the highest ranking female African-American pilot in the Department of Defense, to give Capt. Jones her oath of of- fice for her promotion. Jasmin Silence did a wonderful job officiating. With many in attendance to include the WASP and astronaut Dr. Yvonne Cagle , Capt. Jones was totally shocked to see Lt. Gen. Harris walk up for her oath. Humbled and inspired beyond measure, Capt. Jones was promoted to major in a ceremony she will be sure never to forget. ✈ Lin Caywood (right) and Janet Davidson Luz Beattie, Kathy Dondzila, and Paula Wivell JOHN RIEDEL AOPA CHAPTER MILE HIGH CHAPTER
