Honoring the Pioneers
Reaching the Public
One of the highlights was the closing ban-
quet to induct this year's Pioneer Hall of
Fame members. With more than a thou-
sand in attendance, the evening honored
the First Class of Women Naval Aviators;
Elizabeth "Betty" Everts Greene, co-founder
of Missionary Aviation Fellowship; and Lt.
General Stayce Harris, the highest-ranking
African-American female military pilot in all
the United States armed forces. The program
also included the final scholarship awards
of the conference including type ratings
and other flight training scholarships (from
recreational and sport pilot to commercial
and CFI certificates), as well as other avia-
tion scholarships in areas including mainte-
nance, engineering, management, and more.

For the first time, two special sessions offered attendees and
the local community to learn more about flying. Longtime
instructors John and Martha King hosted "The Excitement
of Flying" open session on Saturday morning, and with the
help of a number of certified instructors answered questions
about getting started in flying and how to finance training.
Meanwhile, AOPA spoke to airline pilots wanting to return to
their general aviation roots during its "Back To Your Roots"
session and provided tips on ways to get back into the sky in
small airplanes.
