44 The 29th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference M A R C H 2 2 - 2 4 , 2 0 1 8 MARCH 22-24 2018 Reno WAI 2018 Keynote Speakers Janine Shepherd Janine is an internationally renowned speaker whose inspiring TED talk, "A Broken Body Isn't a Broken Person," has garnered over 1.5 mil- lion views. She's been featured on 60 Minutes, and This Is Your Life, and recognized with her country's highest honor, the Order of Australia. An Australian national champion skier in train- ing for the upcoming Olympics, she was hit by a truck on a bike ride, suffering multiple life threatening injuries. After months of rehabila- tion, she decided to learn to fly. Janine went on to succeed not only as a commercial pilot and flight instructor but also to attain her university degree, raise three children, and author a best- selling book, Never Tell Me Never. Shaesta Waiz Founder and president of Dreams Soar Inc., Shaesta is the first civilian female pilot from Af- ghanistan and in 2017 completed a solo flight around the world to inspire and empower women to pursue STEM-related careers. The route made 30 stops over five continents in 22 countries, tak- ing a total of 145 days. An Embry-Riddle Aero- nautical University graduate, Shaesta started the Women's Ambassador Program that in less than three years helped increase enrollment of wom- en from 13 to 22 percent. Since her historic flight ended in October, Shaesta continues to inspire the next generation through outreach events and public speaking engagements. Dreams Soar is building a scholarship program to empower the children that were inspired by Shaesta during her Global Flight for STEM. Nicole Stott A retired NASA a stronaut, Nicole is pursu- ing her next adventure as a full-time artist. In- spired by her spaceflights, she uses her artwork to share her experiences through the windows of the space shuttle and space station and ac- tively supports STEAM/STEM educational or- ganizations. Nicole worked for the space agency for 27 years and flew two spaceflight missions, including a long-duration mission on the Inter- national Space Station. She held numerous as- signments at NASA, and was a crew member on the undersea NASA Extreme Environment Mis- sion Operations mission, for which Nicole still holds the women's world record for the longest saturation dive of 18 days, before being assigned to her first spaceflight mission. Sean D. Tucker An aviation legend and air show performer, Sean is "Aerobatics' Own Ambassador." He created a nonprofit called The Bob Hoover Academy to inspire at-risk and underserved teens to get en- gaged in STEAM education and aviation. Based in Salinas, California, and co-founded with Eric Tucker, the academy offers high school students a structured flight training program. With plans to retire from solo aerobatics after the 2018 air show season, Sean has flown more than 26,000 hours over four decades of air show appearanc- es, and practices his hardcore aerobatic routine up to three times a day. His famous red biplane, the Oracle Challenger III, will be permanently displayed at the Smithsonian Air & Space Mu- seum. Sean is the chairman of EA A's Young Eagles program and was named one of the 25 Living Legends of Flight by the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.
