56 The 29th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference M A R C H 2 2 - 2 4 , 2 0 1 8 ✈ A V I A T I O N WA I Lunch With Shaesta Waiz The girls will enjoy a group lunch featuring Shaesta Waiz, founder and presi- dent of Dreams Soar Inc. and the first civilian female pilot from Afghanistan. In 2017, she completed a solo flight around the world to inspire and empower women to pursue STEM- related careers. The route made 30 stops over five conƟnents in 22 countries, taking a total of 145 days. An Embry-Riddle Aeronau- Ɵcal University graduate, Shaesta started the Women's Ambassador Program that in less than three years helped in- crease enrollment of women from 13 to 22 percent. Since her histor- ic flight ended in October, Shaesta conƟnues to in- spire the next generaƟon through outreach events and public speaking en- gagements. Dreams Soar is building a scholarship program to empower the children who were inspired by Shaesta during her Global Flight for STEM. The girls will interact with amazing role models ranging from airline pilots to aircraŌ mechanics to aviaƟon industry execuƟves. They'll learn about roboƟcs, go on a navigaƟon chart scavenger hunt, build their own styrofoam airplanes, fly a simulator, build an airport, learn to use tools by making wire bracelets, and lots more hands-on acƟviƟes. The cost for the day is $10 (which includes lunch), and aƩendees must be accompanied by an adult. Chaperones and parents are invited to take part in lunch for $10.
