B
y the time Fatima Shaf, WAI 44827, discovered her love of air-
planes, it was too late—not for a career in aviation, but for the
future she and her family had always imagined. For a girl growing
up in Pakistan, "the goal of life is to be mar-
ried," says Fatima, an ExpressJet Airlines frst offcer operating CRJ
700 and 900 regional jets. "The way the social structure is, you need a
man to support you—morally, emotionally, and fnancially," she says.
