mom, and I'll just be Jo Damato, the woman seemingly every- where at once making sure everything is running smoothly. Before I know it I'll be back on my return flight heading home in time to make it to one of the boys' basketball games and, hopefully, a family dinner before my husband heads out on his trip. I'll lit- erally trade my heels for sneakers. Af- ter a week of carefully selected business wear, fat-ironed hair, actually wearing my contacts and applying mascara, I'll be back in my home offce gear of pony- tail, baseball hat, yoga pants, a Phillies sweatshirt, and glasses. While I've been gone, my husband will have figured out the system that works best for him. He'll have had the week to tackle his own list of house projects, using the time the boys are at school or after they go to bed to caulk the shower, paint a room, fix all of the broken things we put in his shop assum- ing that he can fx anything once he gets the time. He'll have had plenty of bond- ing moments with the boys that they will cherish. They'll throw the football around, eat junk food and drink soda (don't tell mom!) in front of the TV during a Star Wars marathon. To his credit, he'll have kept up with the laundry too, restocked the fridge, and sorted through the mail for me. I've never re- turned from a trip feeling like I've been taken for granted. And suddenly, January is over. February will be calmer. I'll have minimal travel, he'll have weekends home. Friday nights will fnd the four of us playing Monopo- ly or watching a movie together all bun- dled up on the couch, a fire roaring in our wood-burning stove while the snow comes down outside. We'll work out a date night on a Sat- urday while the kids enjoy a sleepover at my parents'. We'll probably talk about this crazy life we knowingly signed up for together. As we approach 17 years of marriage, we'll reflect on the three moves, the multiple employer changes, and his lengthy furlough post-9/11. We'll talk about our budget, the places we want to see, and the steps we want to walk to- gether. We'll eagerly look forward to the next 17 years. A nd then we'll sta r t planning for March when I have not one but two con- ferences to attend! See you in Nashville! ✈ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Joanne M. Damato, WAI 6829, is a mom, pilot, and director of operations and educational development for NBAA.
