10 Aviation forWomen J U L Y / A U G U S T 2 0 1 6 A E R O S P A C E E N G I N E E R I N G S C H O L A R S H I P S American Airlines Engineering Scholarship American Airlines will award one $5,000 scholarship to a student pursuing a degree in aeronautical, electrical, or mechanical engineering with a passion to work in the air- line/aviation industry. Candidates will be evaluated on ac- ademic standing, personal accomplishments, teamwork, leadership skills, community service involvement, and fu- ture career aspirations. Requirements: Meet all WAI scholarship requirements and guidelines, high school diploma, GPA 3.0 or higher, enrolled in accredited U.S. engineering program through a college or universi- ty, U.S. citizen or permanent resident. To complement the scholarship, American will host the winner with attendance to the 28th annual International Women in Aviation Conference in Orlando, Florida (including air trav- el, hotel, and conference registration). American Airlines' technical operation divisions are vi- tal to the company's commitment to provide safe, depend- able, and friendly air transportation to its customers. As such, American Airlines seeks to attract top engineering tal- ent that shares passion and interest in the aviation industry. (Scholarship value $5,000— estimated total value $7,000) Bonita Jean Olson Memorial Scholarship Bonnie started her career as an educator, moving on to the aviation and aerospace industry, and spending almost 30 years working in commercial aviation and space programs. Upon retirement her passion for aviation blossomed while volunteering at the Mu- seum of Flight, where she loved to lead tours dressed as a Women Airforce Ser- vice Pilot (WASP) and share their stories. Bonnie always wanted to extend the opportunities for women in aviation, and we, her family, are proud to fund a scholarship in her name. In addition to all WAI requirements, the applicant shall be pursuing higher education toward a STEM career in avia- tion or aerospace. The applicant must be enrolled (or com- mitted to attending) an accredited institution (includes two- and four-year colleges, technical institutes, and certificate programs) and have experience volunteering in STEM- or aviation-related events and/or WAI activities in the previous year. In your WAI application essay, include detailed expla- nations of career plans, goals, and volunteer experiences. The scholarship must be expensed within one year of receipt and will be paid directly to an accredited program/ institution. Funds may be applied to tuition, books, or labo- ratory fees. STEM careers include those in science, technol- ogy, engineering, mathematics, or business, including air traffc controller, avionics technician, dispatch certifcation, aircraft mechanic, meteorologist, or educator for the sub- ject matters. Funds may not be used for housing, transpor- tation, fight training, meals, or incidental expenses. Preference will be given to local candidates within the Seattle/Washington state area, but all applicants will be considered based upon character, need, community in- volvement, and accomplishments. (Scholarship value $3,000) Delta Air Lines Engineering Scholarship Delta Air Lines will award a $5,000 scholarship to a student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate degree in aerospace/ aeronautical, electrical, or mechanical engineering. In ad- dition to the $5,000 scholarship, the recipient will receive a trip to the 28th annual International Women in Aviation Conference (includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommoda- tions, and conference fee). Applicants must be full-time stu- dents at the junior or senior level with a minimum of two se- mesters (as of February 2017), with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens. In addition to all WAI requirements you must also in- clude a detailed essay (500-1,000 words), typed and dou- ble-spaced, that addresses the following topics: ➊ Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in aero- space/aeronautical, electrical, or mechanical engineering? ➋ What is or has been your greatest life challenge, and how has it enriched your and/or someone else's life?
