6 Aviation forWomen J U L Y / A U G U S T 2 0 1 6 Girls in Aviation Day Is Just Part of the Fun L ast year, WAI chapters took on our frst international Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD). The WAI team didn't really know what to expect, and it was exciting to see about half of all WAI chapters around the world hold their frst GIAD event. This year the number of chapters holding a GIAD in 2016 is on the rise and excite- ment is building! Only WAI chapters and corporate members may hold an offcial Girls in Avia- tion Day event. An unexpected beneft of this structure is that we saw chap- ter member- ship rise in ma ny plac- es because WAI members were drawn to participate in Girls in Aviation Day and the mission to introduce future generations to aviation. It's a reward- ing way to get more people involved. With an expanded educational and activity kit, and the lessons we all learned from last year's event, GIAD 2016 promises to be another success. In addition to Girls in Aviation Day, WAI chapters are reaching out into their communities to make a differ- ence every day of the year. The not- so-quiet secret is that the chapter members are having a great time to- gether with hands-on activities, tours, fund raisers, speakers, training ses- sions, scholarship awards, and social activities year-round. Each chapter is unique and is molded by the member- ship and the local aviation community. Is it time for you to get in- volved in your local chap- ter?
